Rotary collaborates with Canterbury Volunteers NZ (CVNZ) to restore the land, devasted by earthquakes in 2011.

Rotarians roll up their sleeves to support local challenges, all over the world. In Christchurch, this looks like several Rotary Clubs coming together to restore the land, previously devastated by a series of earthquakes in 2011. By planting trees and restoring the land, future generations of people and wildlife will be able to enjoy the recreational parts this corner of the world has to offer.

“We couldn’t do this without the support of Rotary,” says Hamish Fairbairn, Regional Manager CVNZ. “The commitment, the dedication… it’s also one of those amazing projects where the different Rotary Clubs of Christchurch can be involved.”

Liz Courtney, a Rotarian from Christchurch and Rotary South Pacific’s Learning & Development Director, is proud to be a part of this project.

“We’re really wanting to leave a large legacy to the City of Christchurch. It’s a really important part of our community and environmental projects across the city,” Liz explained. “And, it is one of Rotary’s areas of focus, which is the environment.”

With a goal of planting 42,000 trees on this site, in addition to Conservation Volunteers New Zealand’s 80,000 trees, this project will require dedication and patience.  Over the next few decades, the community will watch and maintain these plants to grow into a new landscape for all to enjoy.
