Discover the benefits of welcoming diverse voices into your club

While some may believe that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) are a series of buzzwords, they are actually values that are directly embedded into Rotary International’s Action Plan.

“As People of Action we are inclusive, engaging, compassionate, and ambitious on behalf of the world.” (Rotary International, Action Plan)

Since its inception over 120 years ago, Rotary has progressively embraced diversity, welcoming members from varying cultural, social and economic backgrounds. By becoming a more welcoming place for people to connect, grow, and lead change, we open ourselves to new members and greatly improve our ability to effect meaningful change.

How embracing diversity can benefit your club

  1. Build stronger connections
Feeling seen and listened to creates a strong sense of belonging. When we show others genuine curiosity about their lifestyles, cultures or ways of thinking, they often respond with enthusiasm and motivation to get to know you in return. This fosters powerful connections and may enhance someone’s sense of belonging within your club or increase the likelihood of a membership enquiry.

  1. Encourage creative problem-solving
Each person, whether they are Rotary, Rotaract or community member, can bring a unique perspective or nuance to a topic. By embracing a diverse range of perspectives from a diverse group of people, your club is more likely to enable creative problem solving, offering new and holistic outcomes you may not otherwise achieve.

“As People of Action we seek new perspectives and new ideas that can strengthen Rotary and create lasting change” (Rotary International, Expand Our Reach)

  1. Discover community insights based on lived experience, rather than assumption.
As an inclusive and diverse club, you may develop strong connections across various demographics in your local community. Trusted relationships enable key insights from people with lived-experience in various circumstances that you may otherwise have made assumptions about. With these real-life insights, you can develop strong applications for Rotary or other grants to increase your club’s impact with that segment of the community.

  1. Boost wellbeing and motivation
Experiences, like meeting someone new or seeing things from new perspectives, trigger the release of dopamine in our brains. This chemical help us feel motivated and positive, making it easier for us to build skills, learn and grow. When we feel positive in our club experiences, we are more likely to achieve our goals.
