Rotary started with just four friends and an idea back in 1905.

Today, it’s a global network spanning more than 200 countries and geographical areas, with people coming together to create positive change in communities around the world.

How it started

Friendship has been at the heart of Rotary since its beginning. On 23 February 1905, Paul Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele and Hiram Shorey came together in Chicago with a simple idea: to create a place where professionals from different backgrounds could build genuine connections and lasting friendships.

First Rotary clubs in the South Pacific

Rotary’s spirit of friendship soon extended far beyond its beginnings in Chicago. In 1921, the International Association of Rotary Clubs expanded into Australia and New Zealand, bringing together people across the region through shared values, fellowship and service. The founding of the Rotary Club of Suva in Fiji in 1936 marked the beginning of Rotary’s presence in the Pacific island countries, creating new opportunities for friendships and community connections to flourish.
Today, that spirit of connection continues to thrive, with more than 1,100 Rotary clubs across the South Pacific.
